The purpose of the Micelin Minutemen Competitive Basketball TEAMS are to give competitive players an opportunity to improve their skill through a professional environment predicated upon long-term growth and improvement of every player through a culture of excellence, education, and values.

The Micelin Minutemen have relationships with Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and jr. NBA.

APPROACH TO BASKETBALL PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Sidekick Sports Academy is our parent company. We have training partnerships with local youth basketball clubs and welcome players from any basketball/other sport situation.

Sidekick Sports Academy also hosts College Soccer Prep, Condors Soccer Club, Micelin Seminoles Flag Football, Sidekick Illustrations, SK Running Club, Sidekick Soccer Academy and Wolves Futsal Club. We believe in creating fully developed athletes. We support the local youth sports community and hope that our expertise improves this community.

TIME COMMITMENT

Micelin Minutemen Competitive Basketball Teams only requires that players participate on their TEAMS in the specific season they sign up. There is no required year-round commitment.

We expect athletes to train year-round and for those looking to participate in other competitive athletic programs throughout the year, then Sidekick Sports Academy's various divisions are a logical choice.

For example, the Wolves Futsal Club have played in the World Futsal Championships, other international tournaments and have won numerous Massachusetts state championships. The Wolves participate in both Session I and II of the MA Futsal League (Brookline/Newton).

ACADEMY

The Minutemen "Academy" is a player development program intended to ready players interested in a higher teaching and competition standard. All "Academy" programs are seasonal (i.e. 8 weeks in length) and feature professional coaches and curriculum based on preparing players for a structured, professional environment. For more information about a particular program, click on the title below.

  • DRIBBLE | PASS | SHOOT (ages 2 - 6)
  • PRIVATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (ages 2 - 18)
    • STRENGTH (ages 9 - 18)
      • SUNDAY "Street Ball Games" (ages 7 - 18)
  • WEEKDAY ACADEMY (ages 9 - 18)

AGE GROUPS | BREAKDOWN OF ROSTERS

USA Sports have chosen to use calendar birth years to align with international standards and Youth National Team programs. Previously, age groups were determined based on players born between Aug. 1 and July 31. The change to calendar year age groups will reflect the calendar year, or Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Players are still allowed to “play up” or play in an older age group. The Minutemen will comply with this initiative.

  • BREAKDOWN

  • The Minutemen will represent their team names by birth year (i.e. 07 = 2007). The Minutemen will also represent player ages without the "U" before it and simply say "Age 7".
  • For teams, the Minutemen will aim to field rosters with 8 - 11 players
  • We will adhere to league and tournament standards and there will be an opportunity to double-roster within Minutemen Basketball for certain games, FREE of charge.
  • The Minutemen TEAMS pyramid: Heroes (First Team), Elites (Second Team), Supremes (Third Team)
  • Age: A player's birth year determines which year division they play in (i.e. born in 2001 means you are qualified to play AS OLD as a 01 team)

    COACHING STAFF

The Micelin Minutemen staff is comprised of professionally licensed basketball coaches. We pride ourselves on our staff having REAL knowledge about the sport of basketball and, more importantly, how to connect with young players and educate them on how it can meaningfully impact their life. All of our head coaches have previously worked AS COACHES in professional, college, high school, or club basketball. All of our assistant coaches have coached or played professional, college, or high school varsity. To learn more about our directors, click here

CULTURE

The Minutemen are a community-based club and we will look to draw players from the following towns (within 30-minute drive of each other and home training/match locations): Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Cambridge, Concord, Everett, Lincoln, Lexington, Somerville, Waltham, Watertown, Weston, Winchester, Woburn.

We understand that our players and their families have busy schedules. Local training sessions and nearby games equate to fewer hours lost each season commuting to basketball events. This means more time for rest, school work, family dinners, and other non-athletic enrichment activities.

The Minutemen know that a big reason why families and players join with an educational organization is for the overall experience and fulfillment cultivated by quality professionals. As a result, the Minutemen are pleased to provide the following services. For more information about a particular program, click on the title below.

  • ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT
  • INJURY PREVENTION
  • PHOTOGRAPHY
  • VIDEO ANALYSIS

    CURRICULUM

The Minutemen are heavily influenced in their approach to teaching as "Create better people before basketball players." We look to Horst Wein as a source of information and inspiration. For a detailed look at our teaching methods, click here.

    Learning Techniques

    • More holistic approach.
    • Develops coordination, leadership and tactical awareness, in addition to just technique
    • Logical progression of development based on intellectual and physical capabilities of players
    • Menu of activities during one session. Change activities every 15 minutes
    • Bridges between learning a subject and correctly applying it. Training and competition considered as one unit.
    • Focus on how skill should be best applied: when, where and why

    Role of Coach

    • Players are central to the learning environment.
    • Uses questioning to prompt players. Guides them to “self-discover” the best way
    • Assign players roles and responsibilities to develop leadership
    • Uses “nature”. Understands and allows kids to take breaks and come back to basketball learning when they are refreshed (play on swings or go swimming).

    Role of Players

    • Central and main participant in learning process. Receives, processes and gives information to coach and fellow players.
    • Challenged to think through basketball-specific problems and discover solutions

We have enjoyed many successes with our involvement in youth basketball and learned that one key ingredient of success is clear, consistent communication between the club, its teams and trainers, players and parents. This document is one way of explaining, in detail, our expectations of you as a member of Micelin Minutemen Basketball and what you can expect from the club. It will help you identify some potential problem areas and at the same time answer questions about the club’s decision-making process. As you have committed to become a member of the Minutemen, please take the time to read the following pages carefully. The signature page must be by signed the player and a parent to be accepted to the team. This agreement covers the seasonal year. To view, click here.

  TEAM TRAINING SESSIONS

Team Training Sessions are 1.15 to 1.30 hours in length

Players are expected to attend two training sessions per week. Training sessions will occur Monday to Friday between 4 - 9 pm. (NOTE: Detailed schedule will be released once teams are formulated.)

*Players who would like to train more than twice per week OR can not make their specific team training session will be eligible to train on another day/time with another Minutemen team in either their own age group or similar age group.
